Blurb - "A Dream for You and I"

This song is is where Jane is finally fed up with everything and decides she needs to leave her Grandmother's home and try and strike out on her own. When Kai tries to stop her, she gets upset and tries to explain to him why she needs to leave. In response, Kai tells her he loves her, which of course causes her to completely freak out and run off. This song goes directly into Kai's ballad, "My Angel," which closes Act 1.

Characters: Jane and Kai
Favorite Line: "What about stars?/Aren't they made for wishing?/If every soul is meant to ascend to such heights/why wait til we're gone?"
Hardest Line to Write: The dialogue, actually.
Why: I'm not used to integrating dialogue into my lyrics, and everything I wrote sounded stupid to me, but Tony said it sounds okay, so I guess it works.

"A Dream for You and I"

Jane: [looking up at the sky through her bedroom window] Do you ever feel something… pulling you? Like… You don’t belong here? Like there’s somewhere else you’re supposed to be? Something else you’re supposed to do? Something out there for you?

Kai: [looking longingly at Jane] No.

Jane: Never?

Kai: [moves closer to Jane] Jane, I know exactly where I belong. And it’s here.

Jane: Here? There’s nowhere you’d rather be? Nothing you’d rather do? Kai, there’s a whole world out there that we’ve never even seen. What is so special about here?

            What about dreams?
            Don’t you ever have them?
Don’t you feel them swimming around in your mind?
Isn’t there something that you’re aching to find?
What about stars?
Aren’t they made for wishing?
If every soul is meant to ascend to such heights,
why wait til we’re gone?
There’s no moving on
From dreaming
Except to take the leap
Heaven’s only as far as you can fly.
Somewhere out there is a dream for you and I…

[Jane starts packing]
Jane: There has got to be something more out there, Kai. I can feel it.

Kai: [places his hand on her cheek] Please don’t go…

Jane: [angrily] Give me one good reason. One.

Kai:
            What about love?
            What about our friendship?
In the way of reasons, what more can I give?
You’re the only reason that I have to live –

Jane: Kai, don’t do this.

Kai: Why not? Don’t I deserve a little acknowledgement? Jane, you’re my best friend.
            What about me?
            Would you leave me lonely?
Would you leave me trying, but dying each day,
            Until your return?
Your passion may burn much brighter
            But I’m a fighter too…
Heaven’s only as far as in your eyes
Why can’t right here be the dream for you and I?

Jane: Kai, what are you saying?

Kai: Jane, you know exactly what I’m saying.

Jane: No, Kai, I don’t. Because you can’t possibly be saying what I think you are.

Kai: I’m begging you, Jane, please don’t go…

Jane:
But the dawn creeps over the mountains
And my destiny is calling from afar
            Why stay where we are
            All our lives
            When something deep inside
Is pulling me somewhere beyond the stars?
            What about life?
            What about adventure?

Kai:
All the adventure I need is right here

Both:
I would give anything to keep you near
            But time goes by
            And we grow

Jane:                                       Kai:
Apart…                                    Jane, there’s something you ought to know…
